Street and Smith's New York Weekly |
| Description: |
The New York Weekly, first published by Street and Smith in 1859, was among the earliest and most successful storypapers. Storypapers, also known as "six-cent weeklies," were weekly newspapers that featured an array of serialized stories, poems, humor, sports, fashion, and current events intended for the entire family. These papers enjoyed enormous circulation: by 1877 the New York Weekly claimed an audience of 350,000 readers. The paper's stories focussed on domestic romance, highlighting the joys and sorrows of courtship and marriage. Format: 8 pages, with a front-page illustration (sometimes signed by the artist and/or engraver) and additional imagery inside each issue.
